BestPractice 1.03 An open-source audio time-stretching tool for Windows

BestPractice is a musician's practice tool, to slow down or speed up music, either from an MP3 file or directly from a CD. Ordinarily the sound is distorted when slowed down our sped up - you get the effect like when playing a 33 rpm record on 45 rpm speed (remember the Chipmunks?). BestPractice tries to correct this, so you can slow down and speed up music, while keeping the original pitch. It is also possible to change the pitch of the music without affecting its tempo. Play along with for instance Eb tuned guitars without retuning your own, or slow down that high-speed guitar solo on a CD that you like to learn.

This splits up in two parts: "why is BestPractice made?" and "why would I use it?"
To start with the first: I saw that there were programs available on the internet that do this, and you have to pay for them ($20 to $50). Since I thought: 'I can do that', I had to prove it, right?

And for part two - well, there are probably more reasons, but those I can think of are:

Your favorite musician plays a solo that you want to study, but you can't figure it out on normal speed
You'd like to transcribe music, but need to slow it down to hear it right
You can tune the song to your instrument instead of the other way around
You'd like to sing along, but you need to change the key to match your voice
You're learning a foreign language and you'd like to slow down the spoken examples
You're like me and like to fool around with audio and/or digital signal processing
You think that playing Celine Dion at rave speed is fun =D

set_volume sets the master mixer volume and controls the mute from the command line via command line parameters. This makes it possible to script volume effects like fade in and fade out or just set the volume from any old batch script. When combine this program with sleep, you can create complex volume effects.
Parameters
set_volume [options] [volume]
-v [volume as ] : sets volume Ex: set_volume -v 50 will set volume to 50
-m : mutes computer Ex: set_volume -m will mute the volume
-u : unmute computer Ex: set_volume -vu 60 will set the volume to 60% and unmute the volume
It uses the same engine that the Alarm Clock of Justice uses to set the volume. ]]>

Phone Recorder 1.6 Join and record an ongoing telephone conversation I wrote Phone Recorder because I didn't want to pay $49.95 for EzPhone Recorder. Phone Recorder doesn't have much of a user interface -- just two buttons: "Start recording/Stop recording" and "Exit". When you click on "Start recording", Phone Recorder will join an ongoing phone conversation on the same line, and the button label will change to "Stop recording". The conversation is stored as a .wav file in the same folder as the Phone Recorder executable (.exe) file. Phone Recorder runs under Windows XP SP2, and you need to have a dial-up modem that has voice capability installed on your computer. Some dial-up modems that have worked well for me are the Rosewill USB RNX-56USB, the Zoom 3025C, the AOpen FM56-PX, and the Best Data 56HP92-PCT. The Rosewill is an external modem that plugs into a USB port, and the others are internal PCI modems. Be sure to tell the other party or parties on the line that you are recording the conversation if it is legally required to do so. ]]>
